2010 Consensus Statement

The Reference Group to the United Nations on HIV and Injecting Drug Use

The Consensus Statement identifies key issues and recommendations for action to respond effectively to injecting drug use and HIV.

An effective and evidence-based response to HIV among people who use drugs is required to control the rapid spread of HIV among drug-using populations and to prevent transmission through unprotected sexual contact with non-drug using partners. This response should involve a combination of approaches, should be supported by appropriate policy and legislation, and be protective of human rights.
